THOSE WHO FIT INTO 60 YEARS

What I Accomplished Between 1965-2023

You can see in the timeline the works that I have actively participated in and considered important since 1965. Some of the studies are engineering studies with theoretical foundations, and some are research studies.

  • 1965-1971: Co-Presidency of the Turkish Radio Amateurs Association: Important work on the enactment of the Radio Law. In this context, I care about two documents:
    – Interview with Abdi İpekçi
    – Altan Erbulak’s “Stone Cart” column
During my amateur radio studies, I won places in 6 continents, over 90 countries and one Japanese competition.
  • 1971: Turkey’s First Electronic Brain: At that time, the computer was called “Electronic Brain”. Sait Bolat made the special function circuits of the computer that I built as my diploma study. This computer was used effectively by students between 1971 and 1980. A special news about the computer was published in Milliyet Newspaper on July 15, 1972. The computer was exhibited at Expo-2020 held in Antalya in 2016. It is currently exhibited at the ITU Museum.
  • 1976: Doctoral Thesis: Forecasting Theory and Implementation of the Forecasting Circuit: The doctoral thesis is not a purely theoretical study. The developed theory was realized with the implemented circuit. According to Wiener’s definition of a predictor, the sum of the errors of the values produced by the predictor should be zero. The predictor I theorized meets this definition. In this thesis study, it has been proven that physical changes show a linear distribution and the predictive values produced using the Taylor series also show a linear distribution.
  • 1977-1978: Guest Researcher: Working as a guest researcher at Case Western University (Cleveland – USA) to conduct postdoctoral research. During this period, he worked on control with microcomputers.
  • 1979-1979: Visiting Professor: Teaching as a visiting professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
  • 1980: Associate Professor: Being one of the first faculty members to give lectures on microprocessors in Turkey. Especially to derive Turkish terms in this field. Using Turkish abbreviations for the Symbolic Language, which is considered the main language of the computer. To develop software to write programs using this language. The first program was written by Arda Erol and the second program by Reha Gerçeker. Design and manufacture a Development Computer to test the developed software. The Development Computer was used by students at the ITU Computer Engineering Microcomputer Laboratory until 2010.
  • 1981: Smart Terminal: A microprocessor-based terminal was designed and the necessary software was developed to provide intercity telephone connections. 400 terminals were produced by Telra and given to PTT.
  • 1982: CNC: A classic copy milling machine in Tofaş was converted into a CNC machine. During this conversion work, computer hardware was carried out. The algorithms required for the CNC machine have been developed. All software required for the operation of the computer has been developed.
  • 1985: Guest Research Lecturer: Studies were conducted on the industrial control system at the University of Akron (Akron-Ohio-USA).
  • 1986: Improvement of Istanbul Fire Brigade: Within the scope of this project, detailed studies were carried out on communication infrastructure, design of the communication and management center, determination of access routes to the fire scene, professional fire brigade systems and a report was prepared.
  • 1986-87: Aselsan Consultancy: He continued his consultancy role at Aselsan for two years. During this period, a computerized pantograph project was developed. In this context, the user interface, trajectory algorithms and necessary hardware have been developed.
  • 1987: TRT Bilgisayar Dünyası: I worked as the preparer, consultant and artist of the Computer World program broadcast once a week for TRT-2. In the first part of the one-hour program consisting of three parts, general information is presented, in the second part, applications of the computer in different fields, and in the last part, BASIC programming language is presented in an applied way. The teacher of the third section was me and his student Altan Erbulak. The program can be watched on YouTube
  • 1988: Professor: During this period, I pioneered the establishment of the ITU Computer Engineering Department and became the first department head.
  • 1989: Fenerbahçe D/G Station update project: All systems and software, except sensors, were re-prepared and installed.
  • 1990-1991: Marmara Research Center, Head of Informatics: During this two-year period, studies were carried out on the reorganization of MAM and departments such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Informatics were established.
  • 1991-1995: Long Horizon Project: Within the scope of the project, work was done on the design of the management center and the development of fusion algorithms. It is a confidential project designed for the Navy.
  • 1998-1999: Tekel Tax-Free Sales Stores: Analysis and design of the system that should be established for tax-free sales. This project was taken up again in 2002 and data was transferred between stores using the EDI protocol. For this purpose, EDI Kompozer was designed and developed.
  • 1999-2000: Bursa Police Project: Within the scope of this project, the processes of learning the location of the safety vehicles, determining the working conditions, interrogating the vehicle, directing the vehicle and displaying all developments on the digital screen were carried out. For this purpose, communication infrastructure has been established.
  • 2001-2002: Mernis System: Work was carried out to make Mernis, whose preliminary work took 17 years, safe to serve, and the Mernis system that is in service today was created.
  • 2000-2002: Milgem Project: Working on Milgem’s Combat Action Center design
  • 2000- Board of Computer Engineering Department Heads (BMBB): Presiding over the Board of Computer Engineering Department Heads and convening the board regularly.
  • 2000- Studies on Natural Language Processing: In this context, I supervised 6 doctoral studies. During this period, interlingual translation studies have an important place. DPT supported the translation work from English to Turkish.
  • 2010: Establishment of the Faculty of Computer Informatics: Turkey’s first Faculty of Computer and Informatics was established at ITU in 2010. Because of my leadership in the establishment of the faculty, I was appointed as the founding dean of the faculty and continued this duty for 2 terms until my retirement.
  • 2022: Academic Informatics Foundation: I pioneered the establishment of the foundation that brings together academician in the field of informatics and I am currently the chairman of the board of directors
